Softbank Pushing For TDD Phone Service

While most of the world is just waking up to 3G solutions, Japan is already pushing forward to the next generation (whether you want to call it 3.5G, 4G or something else entirely), and now Softbank and eAccess say they’re moving forward to launch more UMTS TDD base stations in order to test and collect more data, so that they’re ready to go when spectrum is allocated for UMTS TDD services sometime next year. The specific tests they want to see results on concern how well TDD phones can handle a mobile connection in a car, and the dreaded “in-building” connections. Now that 3G technologies are old hat, it’s time to start watching Japan again for what comes next.
