PalmNet Still Existed?

It may have been briefly tempting to write about how the closure of PalmNet was the end of an era, considering it was one of the first real networks for doing mobile data on a PDA. Honestly, though, our first reaction was to be amazed that it still existed at all. The Palm VII, which used PalmNet was always an early adopter’s type of device, and most early adopters don’t hang on to devices for five years (or at least, minus for sentimental or historical value), so it’s no surprise that the vast majority of those who own a device that used PalmNet have gladly moved on to slightly more modern devices. Derek adds: Not often mentioned, but worthy of note is that Palm.Net was one of our country’s first MVNOs. Palm.Net was actually a re-selling of service on the Mobitex wireless network which now belongs to Cingular.
