TowerStream Rides Empire Level Publicity

I can’t recall a single wireless broadband provider getting so much attention for a single rooftop point-of-presence installation as TowerStream got today for putting their equipment atop the Empire State Building. While this does give TowerStream another rooftop, they were already offering service in New York. It’s a good win for them, but not such a huge deal, other than the publicity value. On a good note, however, unlike their last announcement (about offering wireless broadband in Chicago) where they did everything possible to leap on the WiMax bandwagon, this time they’ve appeared much more honest about where they are in relation to WiMax: “Everyone knows that WiMAX gear is not here yet. We’ll hopefully get some WiMAX certified gear in first quarter 2005.” In the meantime, with their efforts in New York, Boston and Chicago, it looks like TowerStream is positioning themselves as the experts to go to when it comes to urban wireless broadband. How long until some larger player acquires them?
