China Dropping Plans For Incompatible WiFi

from the international-pressure dept

Whoops. Just hours after we wrote (on the Techdirt Wireless site) that it looked like China was going to go ahead with their incompatible WiFi wannabe standard called WAPI, comes this news that they’ve been convinced to drop those plans and go along with the rest of the world to offer regular standardized WiFi. The article linked here is just a blurb at the time of this posting, but they promise more details soon. Update: Still seems a bit unclear, but basically it looks like China has backed down on the timing, and may be open to a solution that isn’t quite as problematic to US companies.
