Japanese Blame Virus For Police Investigation Data Leak

from the sounds-more-like-bad-policies dept

Police in Japan are blaming a virus for the leak of information about criminal investigations. However, reading the details, that seems like a stretch. The information first made its way to the private computer of an officer in training, when he was learning to fill out computerized forms and used real data. The police department claims that he was not supposed to actually save that data however. Eventually, they claim that a virus passed the data on elsewhere, and it ended up being shared via a P2P file sharing network. Of course, it could also just be that this police officer was using the file sharing system himself. It seems that the real problem was the fact that this data was put on his computer in the first place. Blaming the virus is just trying to mask that mistake.
