The Portable People Meter Still Metering Away

from the how-good-is-the-data? dept

Last June we wrote about Aribtron’s Portable People Meter device that they were paying people to carry around with them to judge what media they consumed all day every day. Mark Frauenfelder has written up an article for TheFeature with more details about the Portable People Meter, and his own worries about where it’s leading us. While I still wonder who really wants to carry around yet another device, I’m not sure what the big deal is. If people want to give up their privacy concerning what media they consume in exchange for some cash, it’s really their right to do so. I don’t think anyone is being forced to use these devices – and I don’t think anyone is being mislead about what it’s doing.
