Rural Phone Companies Fighting Number Portability

Well, it should be no surprise that now that we’re approaching the point where everywhere else (the non-top 100 city areas) are going to allow number portability that we’d start hearing complaints from those impacted. A number of rural telephone companies are complaining that they shouldn’t be required to offer number portability of their landlines to mobile phones. Their excuse, though, is that their customers (being outside the range of most mobile phone networks) won’t be interested in porting their numbers. Thus, it makes little sense for them to pay for all the necessary equipment and planning to handle number portability.
