Hong Kong Will Not Ban Camera Phones

from the we-need-to-report-the-negative? dept

I guess it’s a statement of the times, when it’s newsworthy to talk about someplace deciding not to pass a certain type of law. From Alan Reiter’s Camera Phone Report comes the news that the folks in Hong Kong have decided there’s no reason to specifically ban camera phones. Secretary for Home Affairs, Patrick Ho, points out (correctly!) that such a law would do a lot more to inconvenience law-abiding camera phone owners than to actually stop misuses of camera phones. At the same time, existing laws can take care of any actual abuses. It’s unfortunate that it’s so rare to see such intelligent thinking from a politician, rather than a simple knee-jerk reaction.
