Will Carriers Stop Users From Saving Photos?

Alan Reiter reports on a rumor that some carriers are working to prevent the ability to save camera phone photos directly to the phone. Instead, they want to force people to send them via MMS (for which they get some money) if they want to save the photos anywhere. As Reiter points out this is “seriously stupid” and he hopes it’s not true. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true, but it’s a typical short-sighted move that will backfire on any carrier silly enough to try it. The history of business failures is full of examples of companies that tried to cut back on features and discovered that customers know enough to take their business elsewhere to a company that lets them do what they want to do. If carriers want to see this in action, then they should move forward with this plan.
