Robot Dogs Work Together To Hunt Down Toxic Waste

from the doing-something-useful dept

Just last week we were questioning whether or not it was unethical to kick a robotic dog. Is the offense any worse if those robotic dogs are sniffing out toxic materials at former landfills and radioactive sites? A researcher took a bunch of leftover robotic dogs, and reprogrammed them to “sniff” out bad materials at sites. The dogs are also programmed to work together, following the dog who has the strongest signal. They’ve been checking out school grounds, often with the help of fascinated students who get to watch the repurposed Aibos in action.
