PayPal Phishing Scammer Pleads Guilty

from the caught dept

With all the “phishing” scams going on today, I’m a bit surprised that when the scammers are caught it isn’t making more news. Here’s the story of one scammer who set up a PayPal phishing scam and also sent out spam messages with a keylogger attached. He was caught and has now pleaded guilty to the charges. He’ll be sentenced in May (why so long?) and could receive up to 10 years in prison, though, it will likely be much less. Unfortunately, the article doesn’t explain how they caught this guy. It also sounds like his scam wasn’t that sophisticated. Most of the phishing scams these days are apparently set up by organized crime groups, who are much more careful.
