Latest E-xtortion Focused On Gambling Sites

from the can't-miss-the-big-game dept

The latest efforts from organized crime hackers is to threaten to take down popular gambling websites just as the Super Bowl gets under way this Sunday. The extortion emails read like typical organized crime threats to local businesses asking for “protection” money. They ask for a certain amount, and promise that will cover the site for a certain period of time. If the site owners don’t pay, they promise a denial of service attack that will take out the site on Super Bowl Sunday. Of course, some sites have already agreed to pay up, though it may just mean they’re branded as easy targets from now on.
