Public Supported E-Village Fizzles Out

from the so-much-for-that-plan dept

An interesting look at an attempt to bridge the digital divide four years ago by putting up a housing project that included free computers and internet access. The article suggests that plan certainly hasn’t been a huge success. There was a rough start when many people were unwilling to go through the necessary two week training program to get the free PC. Also, now that the program has used up its funding, no one really knows how well it’s done. Not a single study has been done to see how (or if!) the people are actually using these free PCs. More telling, though, is the fact that none of the other similar housing projects has offered the same deal.
