How Much Are Carriers Charging For Number Portability

Over at Gizmodo they asked readers to chime in and say just what sort of fees carriers have put in place for number portability. This is something of a follow up to the story from earlier this year wondering if carriers were profiting off of number portability. Gizmodo turns up some interesting findings: the numbers aren’t particularly consistent. Even Verizon Wireless, who has publicly embraced number portability and says they don’t charge, is apparently charging in some cases (on a state by state basis). The only company that doesn’t seem to be charging in any case is T-Mobile. Of those that are charging, the only one that clearly states what the charge is for is Sprint PCS. All the rest hide it under some larger ambiguous “regulatory fee” that sounds official, but certainly isn’t required.
