Siebel Buys UpShot – Pushing Forward With ASPs

from the sounds-familiar dept

Back during the boom years, Siebel was actually one of the first companies to embrace the concept of the “ASP”, and tried to build an online salesforce automation offering called sales.com. They tried to spin it off, bought it back and eventually shut it down, while Salesforce.com and other pure ASPs came along and got all the business. More recently, Siebel has been making noises about how it might be nice to get back into that space with their Siebel CRM OnDemand offering. Based on that, it’s not a huge surprise to hear that they bought UpShot today, one of the leaders in the space. They also brought “enterprise incentive management software supplier” Motiva. It will be interesting to see what they do with UpShot, as it will, in some ways compete with their own offering. While they need to do something to keep ASPs from eating away at their low end, but it may be difficult for the larger company to swallow and integrate a company that presents a competing product.
