Sierra Wireless Gets Into The Mobile Phone Business

There’s been a ton of speculation about this, with lots of wireless rumor sites picking up on the news yesterday, but we figured we’d wait until there was a little more hard proof. Now it’s been confirmed that the latest makers of a Microsoft-powered SmartPhone is Sierra Wireless – the company most well known for making wireless PCMCIA cards for laptops. Not only are they jumping into the handset business, but it looks like the design is a bit innovative. It includes being able to flip open the number pad, revealing a full QWERTY keyboard. At first glance, this looks to be one of the more intelligent SmartPhone designs I’ve seen, though, who knows how well it will work. It will be interesting to read the reviews on this one as they come out. Still, it’s good to see more experiments in the handset world, to try to figure out the best way to combine both phone and PDA functionality into one.
