Will Push-To-Talk Kill SMS?

Sometimes you have to wonder what reporters are thinking (or, not thinking, as the case may be). They simply love a “this vs. that” story – even when it doesn’t apply. While there’s been a lot of hype around push-to-talk, this is the first time I’ve seen someone suggest that PTT will kill text messaging. That reminds me of the predictions from a while back that voice recognition dictation software would kill the keyboard. Certainly there are some cases where a voice message may make more sense than a text message, but there are plenty of reasons why people like to message silently (just like how people want to enter data into their computers silently). Yes, PTT can be a useful feature in some circumstances, but it’s certainly not going to kill text messaging.
