European Parliament Votes For Modified Patent Law

from the wonderful dept

Not fully sure of the details yet, but it looks like the European Parliament has approved a greatly modified patent law. The original bill received quite a bit of lobbying on both sides (though, most geeks only heard about the lobbying against the law). It looks like the “geek” lobby made an impact. The two biggest problems with the law: patenting business processes and software appear to have been taken out of the bill. This would be a good thing. However, the bill still needs to be debated by the EU member states, and the article says that they will probably reject it – because they’ll want the software patents put back in.
