Is Hollywood Getting Better At Depicting Hackers?

When the second Matrix movie came out earlier this year, it attracted a lot of attention in the geek world because of the accuracy of the hacking scene (which some feared was too accurate). While there are still some horrible hacking depictions (Swordfish anyone?), it appears that Hollywood is finally making something of an effort to get scenes involving computers and hackers correct. They’re actually trying to hire advisors who know what they’re talking about, and are getting rid of plot-lines that include computer viruses shown as cartoons on a screen “eating” other files. Geeks worldwide are applauding the better efforts.

Apparently not, since they cant even get the name right. Isnt “cracker” the correct term? A hacker is somebody who messes with stuff not to gain access but to change it, like hacking tivo, hacking your x-box, etc.

Nah. That battle is dead and gone. For years now, “hacking” is common usage to refer to any kind of hacking – good or bad. Complaining about it seems to be a semantic debate from a small percentage of folks who can’t give up a lost cause.

I wanted to be just like the movies, so I made my background screen blue and now I use a 120 point font… it’s very realistic and all my messages blink and make funny sounds. Just like in the movies.
