Gaming Can't Pay The Rent… Yet

from the getting-there dept

There have been a number of stories about how video gaming is increasingly becoming like a sporting event, with the top gamers going to big tournaments, getting sponsorships, and getting paid to win. However, even the best gamers aren’t making very much money. Most still need to have day jobs – but in order to compete successfully they still need to “train” for 40 hours a week – meaning they don’t have very much free time. Once you consider all of the time that they put in to compete, the amount of money they can win is barely worth it – but that doesn’t seem to concern the gamers. Of course, with the new set of companies letting people bet against each other while playing, maybe the best players can start to supplement their winnings that way.
