Student Created Fake Airline, Sold Tickets Online

from the amazing-what-you-can-do-online dept

The old saying was that, “on the internet, no one knows you’re a dog”. Well, an update on that saying might be, “on the internet, no one knows your airline is staffed entirely by one college freshman”. Apparently, an 18-year-old college freshman set up a fake airline site for “Mainline Airways”, promising $89 flights from Los Angeles to Honolulu, and convinced 121 people to pony up for tickets for the airline’s “maiden voyage” on July 3rd. Of course, there were a number of problems, not the least of which was that the airline was incorporated in the kid’s dorm room, and had no planes and no employees. It had nothing, basically, other than a website. The kid still claims that he did nothing wrong, saying that it was never really an airline, but a “tour operator” and he was working to sign up airlines to run charters for him. However, the Massachusetts Attorney General isn’t so forgiving, saying that this is outright fraud, and is considering filing criminal charges.
