Woman Fined For Writing Offensive Comment On Check

from the watch-what-you-write dept

While it may not matter how you sign bills when you use your credit card you might want to be careful in how you sign your checks for the next parking ticket you receive. A New Jersey woman who wrote an “offensive anatomical reference” on a check she used to pay for a $22 parking ticket was then fined an additional $100 for contempt of court as the judge refused her original check. The odd thing here is that there’s actually a “directive” on the books from the state saying that judges couldn’t penalize people who write offensive comments on checks (suggesting this sort of thing happens all the time). The woman thought about fighting it, but decided it was easier to just pay.
