The Decentralization/Centralization Pendulum

from the back-and-forth...-back-and-forth dept

Michael Malone has noticed something that I’ve spoken about with a number of people in the computer industry in the past – which is that we seem to go in “fad” phases back and forth between centralized and decentralized computing. Each time the cycle swings back and forth, people at the forefront seem to think they’ve discovered something new. Of course, the real answer is that there are benefits to both centralized and decentralized computing applications. There are times when each make sense – and the industry seems to lean one way for a while, and forget about the benefits of the other, until someone “rediscovers” them, and then we start tilting back.
