How Fast Is High-Speed Broadband?
from the a-moving-target dept
I know there are some people who get upset whenever people refer to any currently available “high-speed” internet access as either “high-speed” or “broadband”, since they believe we haven’t yet approached real high speed internet access yet. However, over in the UK, there’s an ongoing battle over what one company can claim is “high-speed internet access” is in their advertisements. The company has gotten into trouble with the advertising standards board over there for pitching high-speed internet access that wasn’t that high speed. Now, the company is claiming that 150Kbps is fast enough, though many people laugh at that notion. However, as the company points out, they are putting the actual speeds in every advertisement, so it’s not as if the people don’t know what they’re signing up for.

Prior to moving last fall, I had to make do with dual channel ISDN. It really isn’t that bad. It connects so quickly it seems like it is always on, and with the exception of downloading large files, 128K digital was fast enough for just about everything. In practical terms, it is 3X dial up speed.
