Roxio Close To Deal To Acquire Pressplay – Will Relaunch As Napster

from the a-disgrace-to-the-Napster-name dept

Rumors are flying around about how Roxio, the company that acquired the Napster name, is getting ready to buy Pressplay from the music studios. Pressplay, of course, was one of the absolutely terrible music downloading services, built by the recording industry in response to Napster, but that made a complete mockery of what Napster was all about. Napster was about music sharing. Pressplay is about music downloading and control. There’s quite a difference between sharing amongst peers and downloading from a central source, but the music industry isn’t likely to understand how that’s valuable to them any time soon. Update: This is no longer a rumor.
