Identifying People By Their Walks – Part II

from the keep-walking-this-way... dept

Last October, we first reported on researchers, funded by the Pentagon, who were working on a system to identify people by the way they walked, making a joke about how life was imitating Monty Python (yet again). Well, the Associated Press has picked up on the story, and now we have an update on the latest in Pentagon-funded walk detectors that spends a lot of time talking about how this project is designed to be included as part of everyone’s favorite: the Total Information Awareness organization. At least, at this point, they’re not talking about using it to randomly identify people walking down the street – but for much more specific (limited) uses. For example, a secure facility could use it to notice whether or not someone approaching the building matched the signature walk of an employee or not – and alert guards to be more aware if they did not.
