Has Copyright Law Met Its Match?

from the interesting-challenges dept

Of all the challenges to the DMCA, here’s one that’s a bit different. Blind and disabled people cannot access certain electronic books due to the DMCA – and they’re not happy about it. Many publishers of the electronic books have put restrictions on them, forbidding them to be turned into audio files using text-to-speech software. Getting around that, would be a violation. In some sense, it’s forbidding the books to be read aloud – which seems to go a little far. There hasn’t been any official challenge from blind groups, but they are pushing for (at least) an exception by the Copyright Office to allow circumvention of copy protection for their own uses.
