Wireless Data Racer Gets Into Gear

News.com is talking about how a Japanese lab is being set up in Singapore (yes, you read that right) to create new wireless systems for cars. The idea is to go beyond current wireless systems (either cellular or WiFi based) to offer something that will provide high-speed wireless data access to automobiles using a combination of technologies. The idea is to make use of WiFi, 4G cellular, and special “street cells” built into roadside antennas. The work is apparently being done in Singapore so that it’s more likely to become an international standard instead of a “Japan-only” solution.
