Ads Get Even Bigger

from the content?--who-needs-content? dept

It wasn’t all that long ago that online content companies finally moved away from the tiny banner ad to the “big unit” square ads that are now all the rage. Now, however, some folks have decided even those larger units are a bit too small and are moving to a new larger unit that takes up half the page. It’s a little overwhelming, but I’ve noticed on the pages I’ve seen it on, I learn to tune it out just as quickly as I do with other ads. In some cases, I’ve even noticed that the new formatting makes the article easier to read (not as spread out – more like a newspaper column). Of course, I couldn’t tell you, for the life of me, what was being advertised.

Still no contest for the ugliest and most annoying ads ever, “PopInAds” wins that battle hands-down:

I know popups are kinda annoying, but those are just ridiculous. I can’t imagine how those could possibly be useful to advertisers. They pay a whopping $2CPM which I assume for most sites is hardly the worth the cost of having 0 repeat visitors. Now, if they only played sound clips … 🙂
