Can IT Save Us From Big Brother?

While many people believe that the better surveillance technology gets, the less privacy people have, some researchers believe that’s not true. They think that technology can be used to improve security while also doing more to protect privacy. I think it’s important to realize that privacy and security aren’t mutually exclusive, because too many people assume they are. Most of the article talks about the Hippocratic database we spoke about last year – that would give different people different levels of access to information (with end control being in the hands of those whose data it actually is). It’s good to see people realizing that technology can be used to solve these types of problems – and not just to create them.
