Ice T Selling Album On Kazaa
from the good-for-him dept
Ice T was one of the outspoken supporters of the Napster concept, realizing that it was going to be the modern version of radio. Now he’s putting his money where his mouth is, and is offering his latest album on Kazaa using the Altnet system. This is the extra program within Kazaa that lets content owners sell their works. I’m not sure it’ll work very well in terms of generating sales – but it will show some judges that there are other uses for Kazaa beyond just “stealing” music. I would be more encouraged if Ice T gave away the songs and did some more creative things to earn the money, but at least this is a start. The RIAA, of course, is horrified, though they don’t have a very good reason. The best they can come up with is that Altnet was built on the basis of privacy – which completely ignores the fact that this has nothing to do with piracy whatsoever.

more creative, how?

Funny, I thought people wanted artists to channel their creativity into their art, not into innovative business plans. I agree overall that non-traditional distribution is an exciting area in development, and a worthy topic, but how far from their craft must an artist turn to earn money?
Built by Pirates, Driven by Italians

The entire music business as it exists today was built on the basis of screwing the people who create the product out of every possible penny, but they don’t seem to have a problem with that.
