The Economist Discovers Open Spectrum
Lately the hottest topic for telecom reporters is David Reed’s Open Spectrum theory. Last week we linked to a story on Salon that gives an overview of open spectrum and now the latest issue of the Economist’s Technology Quarterly opens with an opinion piece on the same topic. Reporters have beaten Wi-Fi stories to death and seem to moving onto related topics that have larger implications. But don’t get too excited. While open spectrum makes a lot of sense it requires a total overhaul of how telecoms are regulated which means it will take decades to take root. For now we’ll just have to do as much as possible with Wi-Fi.
