Global Epidemic: Cell Phone Abuse

You know a technology has really taken hold when someone labels the technology in question a “Global Epidemic” as Jeff Wuorio has labed the cell phone. His humorous rant points some genuine problems such as people using cell phones in inappropriate places and some really bad tv advertising. But for the most part what he’s really observing is a society in transition. As a new technology takes place in society there are no clear rules of etiquette, they develop over time. Not only that, it takes time to learn how to manage new technology. This reminds me of how people initially felt about email. It was too impersonal and there was too much of it. But now it has become as common place as telehone calls and we’ve learned how to manage our email. The same will happen with mobile technology.
