Slain Woman's Family Fights Internet Information Brokers

from the looking-for-someone-to-blame dept

Over two years ago we posted the terrible story of Amy Boyer who was murdered by a deranged young man who chronicled his obsession with her and plans to kill her on a website using her name. At the time, there were questions about whether or not the internet should be blamed for her murder instead of the deranged guy. The latest update on the story is that the family of the girl are still going after the company that provided the murderer with Boyer’s social security number and work address (where she was shot). The company claims that the info they obtained (for a mere $150) didn’t contribute to the danger she was in, and everything they did was completely legal. The results of the court case could have a big impact on what companies can do with your private information.
