Spectrum Wants to Be Free

Kevin Werbach has an opinion piece in the latest Wired Magazine about the ideas behind “open spectrum”. He points out that the real problem is an outdated view of the metaphor in talking about spectrum. If people viewed spectrum as a “commons” that everyone could use, instead of as real estate that can be owned by a single entity, the wireless industry would explode with innovative new uses. There is increasing evidence that the FCC (who Werbach used to work for) may be coming around to that viewpoint as well.
