California Leads The Way On ID Theft Legislation

from the going-national dept

California’s Senator Feinstein is working on some legislation, based on recently passed California legislation, that would require companies to tell their customers if a security breach put their information at risk. Many companies try to hide this information because they’re afraid of the backlash. However, many people oppose the California law (which goes into effect next year), saying that it requires companies to be too open about security breaches. They apparently have to report suspected security breaches even when there’s no evidence any data was compromised. Overall, though, people say companies need to come forward with information about break-ins more quickly in order to catch those responsible.
