Wi-Fi Gives Cell Carriers Static

The Wall Street Journal has finally published their version of the “Wi-Fi is a threat to the wireless carriers and their 3G plans” story which plenty of other sources have covered already. What seems to be happening, though, is that the carriers have realized that Wi-Fi is better viewed as an opportunity than a threat and are making strategic decisions on that basis. This is good to see, though, there’s still the chance that they’ll revert back to the standby position of defending their old business model to their own detriment. Already, the Wi-Fi pricing places like T-Mobile are offering aren’t well thought out (suggesting their not really embracing the concept fully), but they’ve got some time to realize where they’re going wrong.
