Have Copyright Issues Overtaken First Amendment Issues?

from the censorship-gives-way-to-cease-and-desist dept

The NY Times reports from a conference where the big discussion seemed to be whether copyright issues have taken over for First Amendment issues in things that concern artists. It seems that artists are much more worried these days about receiving a cease-and-desist letter than being outright censored. Censorship is moving from a government-protecting-decency issue to a corporation-protecting-profits one. Of course, not everyone agrees with this, but it does sound about right to plenty of people. Corporations are going overboard in their attempts to protect copyright, while governments have certainly become less picky about outright censorship.

Post-music era

If recording companies win, they will produce terrible mass-manufactured music that people don’t like, so music in general will become less popular. If recording companies lose, then amateur musicians will produce terrible amateurish music that people don’t like, so music in general will become less popular.

Music is an older form of entertainment centered exclusively on sound. Musicians have had to play uncomfortable instruments that injure their bodies, resulting in their hysterical temperament.

The future of entertainment is in interactive cross-sensory experiences; of being able to control sounds, sights, smell, touch, taste as one pleases. It will be nothing like music or art as we know it today.
