SparkList Spammer Identified, Thief Still Unknown

from the how-difficult-was-that?!? dept

Someone needed to give clearer instructions, it seems. Following the news last week that a spammer had somehow gotten his hands on various email lists run by Sparklist, Lyris (the company that owns Sparklist) hired a company to track down who was at fault. So far, all they’ve tracked down is who sent out the spam, and even that’s open to some debate (some say the spammer in question doesn’t really exist). It’s certainly not difficult to figure out where the emails came from, but that doesn’t give any real clues concerning who actually stole the lists. There is more support, however, for the theory that this was an “inside” job, since only a few lists were compromised instead of all of them snapped up at once.
