Is VoIP Finally Ready For The Mainstream?

from the getting-there dept

It seems that after many many years of talk about communicating by voice over the internet (VoIP) was the next big thing, it may finally be getting there. The biggest complaint had always been sound quality, but recent improvements have gotten beyond much of the problems. Now, with VoIP services offering cheaper plans than traditional phone companies and adding in extra features that are only possible over the internet, people are saying that now VoIP may really take off. To be honest, when I first saw the Vonage offer (complete flat-rate, everything included for $40) a few months back, I was tempted. I figured I’d wait a little longer until they got some of the kinks out (the lack of number portability is also a bit of a pain, since I would want to keep my current phone number).
