Chinese Censors Step Up The Battle Against Google

from the we'll-send-you-somewhere-else,-dammit dept

Going even further than just blocking Google, now the Chinese censors (who still won’t even admit to blocking Google) are redirecting anyone who tries to visit Google to other search engines that are apparently “approved” by the censor. As one analyst said, “It’s like going to buy Coca-Cola and they say ‘Well, you can’t have Coke but here’s grapefruit juice'”. The sites (all small names) that people are being redirected to all claim they have nothing to do with it, and are disappointed themselves that things have come to this. Update: Ben Edelman has put up a number of screenshots of the non-Google Googles that China is sending visitors to.
