Travel Agent Complaint Against Orbitz Tossed Out

from the no-evidence dept

The Department of Transportation has dismissed a complaint against Orbitz from travel agents. The agents were complaining that Orbitz was unfair competition and putting them out of business. The Department of Transportation said the airlines are allowed to pick whatever channels they want to sell through. Clearly, many travel agents are losing business due to the internet – but it’s not unfair competition, it’s just how the market has changed. That’s business. Of course, if the travel agents had a big powerful industry association like the recording industry (and donated huge gobs of cash to various Congresscriters), you’d probably see a slew of anti-online ticketing bills in Congress right now with “concerned” Senators talking about how all those crazy kids booking tickets online were “stealing” directly from travel agents.
