Wireless Standards Still Too Fragmented

Mobile game developers say that Java’s write-once-run-anywhere potential is being undermined by the lack of standards for wireless devices. Part of the problem is that Sun has no influence over device makers, unlike Microsoft who all but manufactures PocketPC devices. But the Java problem is just emblematic of a greater problem in the wireless industry. Companies need to get together and agree on new standards across devices and software and stick to them. That’s the only way we’ll get devices and services that users will pay for and use.
