Cell Sanity Arrives in Schools
In the 80s, the assumption was that if you were carrying a pager in a school, you were probably a drug dealer, so many states passed laws banning mobile communications devices in schools. These days, however, those laws are clearly out of date, and many parents actually require their kids to carry mobile phones for safety reasons. Of course, many of those laws are still on the books, and students are often being unfairly punished by administrators sticking to the letter of the law. People are finally starting to fight back to repeal these out-of-date laws. It’s amazing how slowly the legal process seems to lag behind reality. I’m actually surprised that these laws ever passed in the first place. Couldn’t each school district set up their own rules? What’s the legal basis for banning pagers in school?
