Europeans Getting Their Own DMCA

from the have-fun-with-it dept

Europeans have had a grand old time making fun of the US for the DMCA for the past few years, but now it seems they’re getting their own version of the law. The European Union Copyright Directive will, among other things, make it illegal to circumvent copy protection. Some say that the European version goes even further than the DMCA by making it a crime just to possess circumvention technology. Does that mean just looking at the DeCSS code (since it’s now cached on your machine) becomes a crime?
