Just What Is An MVNO?

MVNOs seem to be a diverse lot. Virgin Mobile is one of the better known ones and seems to fit the classic Mobile Virtual Network Operator model. They buy airtime from someone and package it with their own handsets and service offerings. But Japan Communications Inc (JCI) adds a twist to the model. They take a more system integrator approach to selling wireless services. Regardless of how you define MVNO, the main thing is that MVNOs provide a unique set of services that existing wireless carriers do not offer and that customers want.
