For all those people who were scared and upset that the dot com that employed them was going out of business, many are suddenly realizing that life without a job isn’t so bad. Sure, there are bills that need to be paid, but if you had some savings, and live frugally, you can get by for a period of time and actually enjoy your days. That’s what many former dot commers are finding. While they all expect to go back to work at some point, they’re making the best of their current situation.

Save Your Money-Save your Honey
The key phrase was “saved money”. I was laid-off in Sept, 2001, and just started back to work last week, May, 20, 2002. I never really started saving money until 1984 at the age of 32, but we had more than enough to get through this crisis. Not only did the 401k save us, it gave me some time to breathe and take a break, even though it wasn’t scheduled. There was no panic nor much edginess so the kids were not affected very much by the whole thing. That right there is my greatest relief. Luck is good. Pstevenson

You’d think I would have learned the first time I got laid off, but nooooo. When I first got laid off, I got lucky. I didn’t have any savings, but the severance package (such as it was) gave me enough to squeak by on for a few months while I tried like a madman to get a new job. I must lead a charmed life, because the day I ran out of money, I got an unsolicited call from an online acquaintance who I had never talked to on the phone or in person before, and he offered me a job without even having seen my resume.
Fast-forward to now. Jobless again. Caught without savings again. Moderate prospects in sight, but hope is waning. Will fate smile on me once more? Only time will tell. Sigh.
Its all well and good...
and you are right the key word is “savings”…but what about us canadian students who still owe 18 grand on our student loans at 250$ a month? Plus other debts….yikes.
If I had NO debts, I could squeak by on UI..food rent etc…and then maybe consulting.
But with all my liabilities its too uncertain…I simply need a paycheck.
