Europe's Wireless Bubble

from the we-weren't-the-only-ones dept

Business Week has a good synopsis of Europe’s wireless bubble, the equivalent of the dot-com bubble in the US. The article traces the irrational exuberance of European carriers and wireless entrepreneurs as they raced to 3G. There were many mistakes and lots of money ill spent. Just look at the mess that Vodafone is in. But the article also implies that some of the blame lies with the European Commission’s mandate to standardize Europe on GSM. However, if anything, GSM made Europe a wireless leader and paved the way for a global wireless market. Blaming GSM for the bubble is like blaming TCP/IP for the internet bubble.
