RealNames Is NoName Any More
from the bye-bye dept
I have to admit (as I’ve said before) that I never understood the point of using RealNames or (even worse) what their business was. They basically let people type keywords into the URL window to get to a webpage. Possibly useful for some people (though, not many), but not a full business idea. Things got worse for them when they tried to declare that their layoffs were actually a sign of success and had nothing at all to do with the struggles that other dot coms were having. I’d like to see how they try to spin the fact that they’re now completely out of business. This is a company that over the past five years raised over $100 million.

Microsoft killed RealNames
Whether you like the idea or not, RealNames as a business was killed by the non-renewal of a deal they had with Microsoft to be included in IE. Obviously, not being included in IE means that you lose 90% of the market. You can read the founder of RealName’s account here.
