Cubans With Bootleg Internet
from the sneaking-onto-the-net dept
If you thought accessing the net from China was a pain, here’s an article about what folks in Cuba go through to reach the outside world. While Cuba is encouraging computer literacy, that doesn’t mean they want everyone out there reading cnn.com. Apparently, it’s nearly impossible to reach the internet legally if you’re Cuban in Cuba. However, there are internet access cards that give a certain number of hours access that foreigners can buy. These allows Cubans (who buy them off of the foreigners) to access the internet in secret for a limited period of time (though, certain anti-Cuba sites are still blocked). Update: An interesting update to this. Wired is now saying that Cuba has banned the sale of computers to its citizens.
